Why Aren’t There 21st Century Flip Phones?

Apparently by the 23d century, we’ll have returned to flipping flip phones. We know this because in Star Trek Beyond, the intrepid crew of the USS Enterprise employs communicators with lids that have to be flipped up to operate—subspace radio gear still must be pretty bulky in 2260.

But why don’t we have smart flip phones now, especially when smartphone makers are looking for any competitive edge they can find? Read my observations here.

If Action Cams Are Over, What’s Next?

GoPro, the inventor of and leading seller of action cams, recently announced what it called a “deep loss” for its first quarter 2016. It was GoPro’s second straight quarterly drop after several years of storybook hockey stick ascent to top of the camcorder selling stack.

Not that we want to kick a company when it’s down, but we are not surprised at GoPro’s recent struggles. Considering the faddishness of the camcorder business in the last decade-plus, the whole action cam phenomena seemed just like another short-lived mania.

It was 2 am on a spring night in 1944 — May 14, to be exact. And thanks to the good fortune of suffering from insomnia, a curious observation by John T. “Jack” Mullin led to the introduction of tape recording and, by extension, the entire home media business.
